Pat’s blog, Thursday 18th November 2010

Hi all, I have been looking forward to this day since the weekend………………..I have now got 24 days off……..hoorah. This last week or so the weather has been relentless and the ships have kept on coming, I don’t think I can remember a busier period.

These are pictures of a ship I have piloted twice over the past 11 days. She is what we call a feeder container ship, 132m long and 19.2 m wide. These ships load boxes at ports where only the very big box ships can go and “feed” them around the country and continent… On her deck as you can see the ships are capable of carrying 7 boxes across and 5 high which makes visibility a problem and also provides a lot of area for the wind to blow at!! On both occasions I required a tug to assist us into the lock at Immingham. The wind was blowing over 30knots on her first visit, quite a battle……………but hey I am off now for over 3 weeks.

Thank goodness remembrance day is over. I am always very challenged at this time of the year as I just cannot understand why we have to go through this same “celebration” every year. I haven’t bought a red poppy for nearly 30 years now, as I feel we are just perpetuating and glorifying war year on year………….The poppy was supposed to be an act of remembrance for all those that lost there lives in world war one “The war to end all wars” but we continue to war and continue to remember young people who have died only last week. Why Oh why!!!

I have taken to wearing a white poppy from the peace pledge union, ( always good to promote a discussion) which first made an appearance on Armistice day 1933. They do not get much press but there website is well worth a visit, www.whitepoppy.org I would urge people to check out this site and maybe next year wear a white poppy instead………let’s try and change our culture of war into a culture of peace.

How can we as Christians condone war, how can I as a Christians say it is ok for an army to go and kill people in my name. I cannot and I want to opt out of this countries regime of war……….What would Jesus do? I can tell you : Matthew ch5 v 43 ” You have heard it was said love your neighbour and hate your enemy. But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven…………….if you love those who love you what reward will you get?…………Be perfect therefore as your heavenly Father is perfect”

Pat’s blog 12th November 2010

Hi all, sorry for the delay since my last post, but I have had serious problems with my pc which are now hopefully resolved.

Plus I have had a string of night time pilotages and it is horrendously bad weather, in fact I have just heard that the pilotage on the river is suspended due to the horrific weather. Which is a first for the River Humber.  Pilotages areas around the country and on the west coast of Europe suspend the pilotage in bad weather quite frequently but the River Humber continues to board and land pilots in atrocious weather……thankfully common sense has prevailed this time. I am due for a very large ship later on this afternoon, which means a 15 mile trip out into the North Sea at about 1730, I could really do for the weather to dissipate very rapidly or keep on blowing all afternoon!! Trouble is even if the wind did stop the sea and swell take a lot longer to die away……………………

There is definiteley something happening with the weather…………when I first went to sea in the seventies a deep Atlantic depression would be probably in the order of 995mb and a really bad one 990mb. Already this winter, in fact this week we have had one storm of 960mb and this latest blow, the remnants of tropical revolving storm Thomas was in the order of 946mb, what is going on!!! I do know that deep low pressures mean very srong winds which will also mean that I will be keeping our local chemist in business as I stock up on seasickness pills!!!!!

We have had some nice ish days though and at the weekend I managed to pick the fruit of my Medlar tree down on the allotment. A strange fruit, the Medlar, we use it to make a lovely, goldeny brown jelly which is great with lamb and pork. I have now left them in my potting shed for a month or so, placed nice and neatly on a tray.  They do look nice arranged in straight rows and columns……………..We then wait until they go off!!  Yes that’s right, you only start to use them when they are squidgy and rotten, a process known as “bletting”. Then and only then do you begin the jelly process…….yummy. Below are some pictures of the Medlar, taken at my allotment and in my potting shed, how sad am I!

Jayne took the talk last weekend and Sue led the meeting as unfortunateley I was working. All went very well though, probably even better without me…….Jayne’s talk is now available in the multimedia section of the site, please download our talks, it would be great to get some feed back from you if you would like to leave us some comments………………….
